Royal residents
Pantropica has royal residents! At the back in Amazonia, there are two Victoria crowned pigeons busy building a nest. Are you unable to locate the birds on their nest? In that case, look around carefully. The birds with fan-shaped feathers on their heads scratch around the entire day looking for food and little twigs for the nest.
Did you know…
That, in the Dutch language, the Victoria crowned pigeon is sometimes also referred to as the ‘fan pigeon’ (‘waaierduif’) due to its beautiful crest? A male pigeon is referred to as ‘a cock’ and the female as ‘a hen’.
Victoria crown pigeon reproduction
Victoria crown pigeons are monogamous birds. They perform a courtship dance each time before nesting. In doing so, the birds make humming sounds and jump and run around each other. When it is time to build a nest, the male will gather the nesting material. The nest building itself is the female’s task. She doesn’t really create artwork as the nest is nothing more than a sloppy platform of twigs.
