I see, I see
Two types of freshwater rays can be found in the Pankong River. The white-blotched river stingray is a striking sight with its black body and white spots. You can mainly find it at the bottom, as it’s its favourite place to swim.
Not a bone to break
A ray’s skeleton does not contain a single bone. Just like sharks, rays are cartilaginous fishes. Their body consists of elastic material that moves effortlessly through the water. This makes them look almost like floating discs with a long tail. A few gill slits on the underside of their body enable the freshwater rays to breathe.
Did you know…
That a ray will not attack you, as long as it doesn’t feel cornered? Watch out if it feels threatened! A ray’s tail is namely outfitted with a venomous barb.
