Silver arowana

Silver arowana

Is that a bird? No, it’s a silver arowana! The Pankong River is home to a few silver arowana, which can occasionally be spotted above the water’s surface. But why do they fly above the water’s surface?

Ready to take off

Being a notorious high jumper, the arowana can jump up to one to two metres high. As bizarre as this might seem, its jumps allow it to hunt among the low hanging branches of the trees. One quick jump with its mouth wide open and its prey is swallowed whole.

Did you know…

That the silver arowana is also called ‘water monkey’ because of this unique hunting technique?
