Violet turaco

A blaze of colours

Playing hide and seek with a violet turaco is reserved exclusively for advanced players. This bird namely prefers to reside high in the trees even though it is not a very strong flyer. When walking around in Amazonia, you have to pay attention if you want to meet the violet turaco. Preferably residing high in the trees, it is also an expert in hiding. Its dark colour makes it even harder to spot.

Morphology

Turacos’ feet are uniquely arranged, namely with a fourth toe. This toe can be rotated forward and backward and serves them well when climbing and cavorting. This gives the bird a solid grip on any tree trunk and enables it to hop simply from branch to branch.

Did you know…

That the violet turaco can also look green? The bird is mostly glossy violet-coloured and can even look very dark or almost green depending on the incidence of light.
